Contemplative Environmental Studies: Pedagogy for Self & Planet

With Prof. Paul Wapner

Aug. 1-6 Cost: $700 Open to Professors and others concerned with Environmental Education

How can higher education best address global environmental challenges? This workshop, offered in conjunction with the Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education, explores the role of contemplative practices in scholarly inquiry and teaching at the college and university level. Through discussions with distinguished scholars, focused conversations among colleagues, artistic exercises, and regular contemplative practice, participants will collectively fashion the emerging discipline of Contemplative Environmental Studies into a pedagogical tool capable of assisting humanity in addressing environmental dilemmas. Part workshop and part retreat, this 5-day summer institute seeks to open the doors wider to our own inner resources and capabilities as teachers committed to education on a fragile and wild planet.

Paul Wapner is associate professor and director of the Global Environmental Politics program in the School of International Service at American University, and author of Environmental Activism and World Civic Politics, and Living Through the End of Nature: The Future of American Environmentalism. He is also a Lama Foundation Trustee.

Paul will be joined by a host of guest teachers.
